Perhaps the most interesting addition out of the above companies is Arxan, which is in the business of DRM. That might seem like an odd coupling, but according to company CTO Kevin Morgan, as part of the PCGA, Arxan looks to "ensure that due consideration is given to the protection of intellectual property, preservation of game integrity, and unobtrusive DRM models."

Toshiba Unveils 21-Inch 3D Display and review

Toshiba says its new 21-inch display adopts a lens sheet to control reduction in surface luminance intensity so that it's every bit as bright as a standard 2D display. When it will ship and for how much remains to be seen, but Toshiba isn't alone here. Both Sharp and Hitachi are working on autosterescopic 3D displays of their own, though on a smaller scale.

"To date most 3D products have used special glasses to separate a picture into two images: one for the left eye and the other for the right eye," Toshiba explains. "But the market has strongly desired a more versatile and glasses-free approach that could be used anywhere. This new product employs an integral imaging system (a “light field” display) to reproduce a real object as a 3D image that can be viewed without glasses over a wide range of viewing angles.

Word on the Web is that one or both of these manufacturers will provide the 3D panel for Nintendo's upcoming 3DS handheld. Therefore, the display is suitable for 3D monitors used for advertisements and entertainment appliances."

Here's a buzzword to remember: Autostereoscopic. What is it? Put simply, it's a type of display that allows for 3D content without having to wear any funny looking glasses, and several major manufacturers are jumping on board. Dell are working on a Windows Phone 7 device called the Lightning

Expected launch will be sometime in Q4 of this year. No carrier partner was listed, but there's one more surprise. Dell expects to release an LTE version of the phone in late 2011. Not telling is this phone will still look as good by then, but we're plenty excited to see it come out.

The Lightning is expected to have a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 4.1-inch WVGA OLED touchscreen, a 5MP autofocus camera, and support for both AT&T and T-Mobile 3G bands. Dell is also including an FM radio function and the usual Wi-Fi, GPS, and accelerometer support.

There will be 1GB of flash memory built in, with an additional 8GB MicroSD card. Oddly, the documents leaked to Engadget seem to indicate the SD card is not user-accessible. Dell also indicated there would be full support for Adobe Flash; we're interested to see what Adobe has to say about that.

It looks like Dell is really taking the smartphone space seriously, with news that they are working on a Windows Phone 7 device called the Lightning. The phone looks to be the rarely seen portrait QWERTY slider form factor. With most Phone 7 devices we've seen looking like pretty similar landscape sliders, this is a breath of fresh air. The image is only a render, but the design looks very elegant. The specs are also looking good.

Problem is, I don't want to risk my laptop if it turns out it wasn't put that way. I would definitely hate myself if mistake happens since instead of saving money for new Dell Inspiron 1100 AC Adapter, I burnt my laptop which is way more than the Dell AC Adapter.

You might ask why the barrel is necessary. Well it isn't really necessary, but I just think that it adds protection to your soldered wires as you will see on the next steps. Moreover, I think they look more aesthetically pleasing than having a bumpy wire with bunch of electrical tapes wrapped around.

Steps to prepare the barrel
1. Remove the tip of the marker as well as the ink holder part of it.
2. Bore a hole on the other tip of the barrel and we are done with the marker barrel for now.

So now we move on prepping the cords.

1. Cut the cord to desired length. Make sure to leave enough cord length so you could actually solder it to the original laptop ac adapter cord. 8. Protect them by wrapping electrical tape on it.

First of all before I sealed the barrel, I just added a little protection to the connections. I added zip ties on both ends of the soldered section. Reason is, in case someone pulled the cord strongly, then the zip ties will prevent the wires from disconnecting.

So with zip ties in place. I sealed the barrel. And now viola! Just by following the steps you got yourself fixed AC power plug.

How to charge the laptop battery in the right way

The technology we're referring to comes from a Japanese company called Eamex, who says it has discovered a way to increase the life of high-capacity lithium-ion batteries. We tend to give this one a bit more credibility, if only because Eamex isn't talking about a theoretical tech that could eventually lead to the demise of lithium-ion.
Unlike other battery technologies, you don't have to wait a decade for this one to come to market. Eamex says it will ship a battery with about 10,000W of power per kilogram (suitable for electric cars and scooters) by the end of 2010.
What Eamex has done is figure out a way to stabilize the electrodes and prevent the deterioration of tin. Why's this important? Because it means the batteries can withstand a lot more charge and discharge cycles. We're talking about over 10,000 cycles with a shelf life of 20 years. By comparison, Apple says a MacBook or MacBook Pro battery can withstand about 1,000 cycles over about 5 years of constant use.

IBM has inked a new agreement with the ABB Group

Panasonic has begun mass-producing a lithium-ion battery for laptops that's rather more capacious charge-wise than current offerings.

The cathode in silicon-air (and metal-air) batteries is the oxygen that comes from the atmosphere through the membrane. Potential uses include medical applications (for example, powering diabetic pumps or hearing aids), sensors and microelectronics structured from silicon.
A battery that would last for thousands of hours between charges while qualifying as environmentally friendly would truly be considered revolutionary. According to a team of scientists from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, such a battery may become a reality within several years.

Sony news: Sony recalls 69,000 AC adapters because of shock hazard

Sony said it has received four reports of adapters short-circuiting, with none of those incidents occurring in the U.S. No injuries have been reported, Sony said. The recall only relates to adapters with certain serial numbers; you can enter your number on Sony's site to see if your product is impacted.
The company said consumers with affected devices should turn off their computers, unplug them, and stop using the recalled AC adapters immediately. They should also contact Sony to arrange for a free replacement of the affected product.
Sony is recalling 69,000 Vaio AC adapters, the company announced Wednesday. Insulation inside some VGP-AC19V17 adapters can fail over time, Sony said, posing an electrical shock hazard.
The Sony VGP-AC19V17 AC adapter shows up in computers from the company's VGC-LT, VGC-JS240, VGC-JS250, VGC-JS270, and VGC-JS290 series sold after September 2007. The adapter also appears in VGP-PRBX1 and VGP-PRFE1 notebook docking stations sold after September 2005.

Gateway's New Notebooks, 8-hour Batteries

In a statement, Acer (who owns Gateway) Senior Manager of Product Marketing, Ray Sawall, said, “The new Gateway EC Series product lines were designed for the many PC users that have embraced the fun and productivity of being able to compute and stay in touch while away from their home or office.” We’ll have to wait and see if consumers agree, but at least this is yet another interesting product offering coinciding with the Windows 7 launch.
Gateway has announced a new thin-and-light notebook lineup for the release of Windows 7 on the 22nd. The series is comprised of the EC58, EC54, and EC14. All will run Windows Home Premium, and will have multitouch trackpads. Gateway is also claiming that all the notebooks are capable of 8 hours of battery life.
The EC58 and EC54 are 15.6 inch laptops with high definition, LED-backlit screens. They run Pentium Dual Core SU4100 series CPUs, offering very low power consumption. They are, however, running an Intel integrated graphics solution. The units will have 4GB of DDR3 RAM loaded as well. The EC14 has a smaller 11.6 inch HD display, LED-backlit, and weighs in at a bit over 3 pounds. Otherwise, the specs are very similar. The EC58/54 will start at $649.99 and the EC14 will go for $549.99.

The Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l, the largest pilots union in the world, has called on the U.S. government and Federal Aviation Administration to halt the shipment of lithium-ion batteries, as well as products containing the batteries, from all passenger and cargo planes until new regulations are in place to ensure the safe transport of what they call “hazardous” materials.
Three incidents in particular have been sited among the ALPA’s call for the halt of lithium-ion batteries in cargo and passenger flights. Apparently flights containing e-cigarettes, used batteries, and another that was carrying a shipment of lithium-ion “bicycle-power devices” resulted in fire, smoke, or evidence of fire in just the past two months.
So far the FAA has said they’re isn’t enough evidence to take any immediate action. With that being said, the ALPA says they are prepared to take their battle to congress if their calls for restrictions go unheard.
ALPA calls on the agencies charged with protecting the public from hazardous materials to issue an immediate ban on lithium battery shipments to protect airline passengers, crews and cargo until the proper safety regulations are in place and can be enforced,” said ALPA’s President, Capt. John Prater.

So far in 2009, battery companies have received over $600 million in venture capital funding, compared with $478 million garnered for 2008, according to research analyst Lux Research. The investment isn't without reason. In a report released Tuesday, Lux predicted that the energy storage market will grow to become a $60 billion industry by 2013.
But for now, it's hard for even the experts to predict who will emerge as the victorious innovators. Instead of a few key players, there's a plethora of both established and start-up companies developing a wide range of approaches to power storage for things like cars, utilities, and gadgets, according to Lux.
And Lux sees Johnson Controls-Saft and Compact Power as leaders in developing lithium ion batteries for electric hybrid cars. But when it comes to batteries for products like power tools, electric bikes, and portables, the space is wide open. That space is open not only to emerging companies, but also as to which type of battery technology will succeed, according to Lux
"Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH), nickel-zinc (NiZn) and even lithium-sulfur (Li-S) and lithium-air (Li-air) batteries are all pitching themselves as lower-cost alternatives," according to the report.
At least one company is already poised to make money off the uncertainty. Lux is offering a service to manufacturers and investors interested in the market. It's dubbed the Lux Innovation Grid, a chart that plots the variables for evaluating companies' battery tech and business models. After two reports of flaming laptop battery , the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Thursday that Hewlett-Packard is voluntarily recalling 70,000 lithium-ion batteries that shipped with several models of its HP and Compaq laptops.
The recall affects nine models of HP Pavilions, nine models of Compaq Presarios, two models of HPs, and one HP Compaq laptop model sold between August 2007 and March 2008. There were two separate reports of batteries that "overheated and ruptured, resulting in flames/fire that caused minor property damage" but no injuries, according to the CPSC report.

This laptop has a power problem. The laptop battery stops charging when I move the power cord on the DC laptop adapter. When I start moving the cord left to right, the power LED light on the front goes on and off and the laptop battery charge LED goes on and off too.
I removed the laptop battery and tested the laptop again. The laptop starts fine from the DC laptop adapter when the laptop battery is removed, but as soon as I start moving the power cord the laptop shuts off. It looks like the laptop looses power immediately.
First of all, I tested the power laptop AC Adapter with a multimeter. The power didn’t cut off no matter how badly I moved the cord. The power adapter output voltage was 15.45VDC all the time. That means there is nothing wrong with the power laptop ac adapters and most likely there is a problem with with the power socket inside the laptop.
You cannot simply unplug the jack and replace it with another laptop battery. You’ll have to unsolder the old jack and solder a new one back on the motherboard.

Intel says stolen laptops cost corporate owners more than $100,000 in some cases, in a study announced Wednesday. The study on notebook security, commissioned by Intel and conducted by the Ponemon Institute, states that laptops lost or stolen in airports, taxis, and hotels around the world cost their corporate owners an average of $49,246 "reflecting the value of the enclosed data above the cost of the PC," Intel said.
Analyzing 138 instances of lost and stolen notebooks, the study based the $49,246 price tag on costs associated with replacement, detection, forensics, data breach, lost intellectual property, lost productivity, and legal, consulting and regulatory expenses, Intel said. Data breach alone represents 80 percent of the cost.
Who owns a missing notebook is important, Intel said. It is not the CEO's computer that is the most valued, but a director or manager, according to the study. A senior executive's notebook is valued at $28,449, while a director or manager's notebook is worth $60,781 and $61,040, respectively.
In addition to the obvious need for vigilance, countermeasures include encryption and data-deletion security services. The study found that data encryption makes the most significant difference in the average cost: a lost notebook with an encrypted hard-disk drive is valued at $37,443, compared with $56,165 for a nonencrypted version, the study says.

I own both a MacBook (an Air) and a Windows machine (HP)--like many people do: a dualism of sorts: one pleases the eye (mind), the other is more utilitarian (matter). Streaming music from within a home network is easy with iTunes and Windows Media Player; what’s trickier is getting access to your 100GB music library while away from home. So how to do it?Let's teach you how to turn your library into an Internet radio station with Apache server software and a little-known program called netjukebox. There are totally six steps:

1. Set up an Apache Server.The first thing you need to do is turn your desktop into an Apache web server. This will let you run the netjukebox software and serve web content. Installing an Apache server can be a complicated process, so we recommend using XAMPP, a web server package, to streamline the setup. This package includes Apache HTTP, MySQL, PHP, and even FTP server support. Download the latest version of XAMPP for Windows (1.7 as of this writing) and run the installer.

Choose the default install location (C:\xampp is recommended, especially for Vista) and choose your desired shortcut icons on the Install screen. You’re also given an option to install Apache as a service, as opposed to an application, which allows it to start even before you’re logged in to Windows. After XAMPP finishes installing, launch its Control Panel. Click the Start button next to Apache and MySQL to enable the web server. The other options let you run a FileZilla FTP server and a Mercury email server, which we won’t be using here. If Apache and MySQL are activated properly, you’ll see their status as “Running,” highlighted by a green bar. Minimize this Control Panel to the system tray.

2. Install netjukebox.Head to the official netjukebox website and find you way to the downloads section. Download the netjukebox for PHP zip package —the current version is 5.10b—as well as the codec pack linked below it. Navigate to the “htdocs” subfolder of your XAMPP install direcotry and extract the contents of the netjukebox zip file into a folder called “netjukebox.”

Open a web browser and type “http://localhost/netjukebox/” into the address bar. If you extracted the files correctly, you should see a light-blue login page.netjukebox will indicate to you that your default administrator login and password are admin and admin, respectively. Create a new folder called “codecs” within the netjukebox folder, then unzip the 14 files in the previously downloaded codec zip file into this new folder.

3. Configure Your Security.Access the XAMPP settings page by directing your web browser to go through to the main XAMPP page.

Click the Security link in the menu on the left side of the page. If you are using Vista, you may encounter an error page that reads: "Access forbidden! You don't have permission to access the requested object. It it either read-protected or not readable by the server." To get around this,go to your "C:\xampp\apache\conf\extra" folder and open httpd-xampp.conf in Notepad. Find the two lines that read "Allow from localhost" and replace them with "Allow from 127.0.0.1". Next, go to your XAMPP control panel and STOP Apache before restarting it again. Flush your browser's cache and try accessing the security page again.

4. Configure netjukebox. Navigate to the “include” subfolder under netjukebox (C:\xampp\htdocs\netjukebox\include) and open the config.inc.php file with Notepad (drag the file into the Notepad app). You’ll have to edit a few lines in this configuration file to direct netjukebox to your music library and set up an administrator password. Search for the line that begins with $cfg[‘media_dir’]. You’ll see that the default location where netjukebox searches for your music collection is D:\Media. Replace that with the location of your music files. We directed netjukebox to C:/Music/. Note that you must use forward slashes AND a trailing slash in this field.

5. Import Your Music. Using your web browser, go to your netjukebox administrator page. Enter “admin” as both the default username and password. Click the admin username on the left and change the password. The admin account lets you create new user accounts, as well as restrict what users can do on your netjukebox. You'll have to relog back in after you do this.

Go to the main netjukebox configuration panel by clicking the config tab at the top of the page. If this is your first time using netjukebox, click the Update link under the Configuration window. Netjukebox will scour your music library and index all your albums. This may take a while, depending on how many songs you have in your collection and the speed of your system.

6. Broadcast Your Jukebox. To remotely stream or download your music, find your IP with a service. From any web browser, type in your IP and add the /netjukebox/ extension. If you’re not behind any firewalls, you’ll get access to the netjukebox login page and be able to browse through all of your music files!

You can also set up a dynamic DNS to access your music server without memorizing your IP. To do so, create an account. Authenticate the account via email and log into the dyndns website. Click the "Services" tab and go to "Dynamic DNS" option. Follow through the "Get Started" link to continue.
